Abuse or suspicious activity - reporting cybercrimes

When dealing with alleged cybercrimes, it is important that we stay within South African law (specifically The South African Consumer Protection Act, No 68 of 2008.) As such we cannot simply remove a site or give a member of the public personal information of the alleged perpetrator.

Please see the Advisory on Reporting Cybercrimes. http://cybercrime.org.za/docs/Advisory_on_Reporting_Cybercrimes_April_2013.pdf

In short, if you are aware of any cybercrimes taking place on our servers, it will be very helpful if you take the following steps:

  1. Draft a short and simple affidavit, which sets out why you believe a criminal act has taken place.
    The affidavit should:
    1.1.Set out the identity and contact details of the complainant;
    1.2.Include the URL of the offending site and / or the email address
    1.3.Set out the facts which led to the complaint being lodged;
    1.4.Make a clear statement that you wish the matter to be investigated further and to be kept informed of process
  2. Lodge this affidavit with your local police station.
  3. Ensure that you obtain a reference or CAS number. This is critical in allowing you to follow the matter up
  4. Send a copy of the affidavit and CAS number to us.

Once the steps above have been followed we will remove the site and back up all relevant infomation that might be helpful to the police.

We cannot, according to The South African Consumer Protection Act, No 68 of 2008 give out any personal information about the alleged perpetrator to a member of the public, but we will endeavour to give our full support to SAPS.
